Memorial Day Message

Jeff Carroll Department Commander - 5/23/2020

Memorial Day weekend is here and this is normally a very busy weekend for VFW Posts and veterans alike. This year is "unprecedented" in that many of us won't be able to go into our communities and lead the ceremonies, observances and activities that we normally do.
But a big part of this weekend is also a time to remember those brave souls who paid the ultimate price for our great nation. It's a time to reflect on what they sacrificed. They didn't come home, they maybe didn't get married, they didn't watch their children grow up, they couldn't give hugs at graduations, they weren't cooking at the grill at family reunions, they didn't get to grow old with us. We will never know all they might have accomplished in their lifetimes. Think about what was truly sacrificed by them and their families.
And think about American freedom. Maybe this COVID-19 situation has helped us to remember how precious is our freedom. Those who gave their lives are an important part of keeping the story of American freedom alive in the world. Think about how blessed we are.
How ever you are able to observe, celebrate and remember those who gave their everything, their futures, their lives for our nation, please take some quiet time to say a prayer for their families and loved ones. Take some moments to give thanks that such men and women lived.
And maybe we can make a commitment to remember them and all they sacrificed by living lives worthy of their sacrifice.
I hope to see lots of my favorite color this weekend: red, white and blue. And I hope that you are your families are safe and healthy.

With warmest respect and regards,
Jeff Carroll, State Commander, Georgia VFW
